I was 14 when my baby brother was born.  We were in the midst of lots of familial changes. He was a surprise, to everyone. My mom didn't even know she was pregnant until she was almost 5 months along. Her doctor had told her she was just stressed. I guess sometimes the doctors get it wrong, ha.

This is the closest thing to a baby picture I have of him:

My mom looks really happy huh? She hates having her picture made.  I bet you couldn't tell, huh?

When I hit 16 and got a car, (and a job, and lots more responsibilities at home) I used to take Dustin with me everywhere I went. Out on a date? I had a car seat and he trudged along. My boyfriend worked at the mall so I'd load up the stroller and take Dustin with me to go hang out at the kiosk. People were forever asking us if he was ours.  I moved out of my house the spring I turned 18, before I graduated high school. Leaving that little boy was one of the hardest things I've ever done.

Today, he turns 21. He was 6 at my wedding. 6!  I can't believe how fast the time has flown. (this is all in my head today as I realized as I was chewing Alex, my firstborn, out for a bad attitude this morning and I realized mid-lecture that I was looking UP at him.   YIKES)

Anyway, I hope he's having a great day. This picture below is Dustin on the left, and our other brother, Danny on the right. It was last fall.

  • it is profound how fast time flies...  and how it seems to move even faster as we get older... i guess that's the subtle reminder to enjoy as much as we can - even through the 'bad attitude'

    monologues

...hope he enjoys his day and you get some time to enjoy with him.

  • I sometimes find it hard to believe that my son is only 25, and my daughter is 15 going on 21! Birthday wishes to your brother.

  • My friends Alicia and Nathan, who got married this summer, both have siblings a lot younger than them.  So, in high school they both had car seats in their cars.  People were always asking if their siblings were their kids.

  • happy 21st to your brother dustin!

i'm startled that someone was just six at your wedding and is now THAT age. when i know that you are younger than me. and people younger than me should not have siblings age so fast ha and kids taller than themselves. unless they are short or something. that could do it. ;) but seriously. time just plain flies.

how wonderful for dustin to have you...

i'm startled too that you moved out before grad.
and i hear an ache with the last sentence in that paragraph.

  • He is lucky to have you as his sister!
    What a heart-tugging post.

  • crazy how the years sneak by. i remember taking care of my brothers...and now they are so tall and 'old'! family is the best. your bro was so blessed to have you for a sis!!

  • our baby brother is 50yrs old now. He's the youngest of 8 kids.

when he was born I think I was in 6th grade? I'm 61 yrs old now. I can't believe they are so old-my little sister is 53yrs old-they were the youngest and they fought like cats and dogs cause we all were gone by then. lol

  • Happy birthday to him :)

  • a very sweet entry and happy 21st to him!

  • I would never have gathered that your Mom hates getting her picture taken.  (or made, as you wrote)  I don't know how you get that from her expression???

To me it is absolutely amazing that as a teenager you toted your little brother around as if he were your own kid.  That is remarkable. And as others said, he is lucky to have you as a sister.

And, since I am too lazy to leave two comments, I also DID read your post just before this one and I have to say two things stood out to me.  The boys' love to Minecraft (my boys too!!! and they are always wanting me to look at their houses...which mostly just makes me feel dizzy and confused) and then the fact that you read 3!! books last week. Where DO you find the time? I still wonder just how many words per minute you read???

  • @appalolly - Why did I say have her picture MADE?? I have no idea. Now I think there may be something wrong with me . . .
YES about the dizzy minecraft thing. Do your kids have animals? Mine are always breeding wolves or pigs and I have no idea why but they overrun their houses and everything. I'm like, stop making wolves if you don't want them in your house! Lessons we learn from minecraft.

It's just that I read fast, I wonder how many words per minute too. Maybe I should find a way to time that. Is that an actual thing, how many words you read per minute?

  • @aSeriesofFortunateEvents - Yes, it IS an actual thing. And yes, you can do an online test.  I feel like you should try it out. I need to know the answer.

  • @appalolly - I just did an online test and got 597. I have to say it was booooring though. I bet I read faster if I like the subject. I got 100% on the comprehension part.  When I'm really "into" the book I don't even see the words anymore, I just see the pictures in my mind. During the test I was just looking at the words. ha.

  • Happy birthday to your brother! I was dropping by after seeing you at a friends site to "friend" you, and I saw your beautiful header! Are those all yours? LOL(bet you've never heard that question before huh.) I have 2 boys and I think it's crazy around here. I'm betting you'd work circles around me!

  • wow--great story.  There are four of us and only a little over five years difference b/tween my older brother and my sister (the youngest).

  • My brother was 15 when I came. My mother knew she was pregnant but then she was okay with it because she loves all her children as they are - gifts from God, she would say. Now, come to think of it that I am 37 and he is 47, I always look up to him and he took care of me much. But in only a few years later he went to college and must leave us I remember me hugging him while he tries to control his tears - it is hard for him to leave me and Mommie alone.

Now, we are the more best friends too!

    Happy Birthday to your bro!

  • What a sweet post! Not many sisters would take a baby on a date with them! It's crazy how people around us grow up, yet we don't age? We are timeless!

  • Sweet   Your such a great big sis.

  • @babybreathblossoms - They are all mine! lol It's definitely a crazy place around here!!

@BoulderChristina -  It really IS amazing that we never age!!! :D

  • happy birthday to your brother.  I hope he's having a good day, too.

  • I could sit and listen to you talk about your "growing up" years all day. Did your boyfriend mind that you often had baby Dustin along?  I think I would have liked hanging out with you at the mall.  I was pretty good with a stroller, too. Just not babies. And AMEN on how fast the time does fly.

  • Happy 21st birthday to Dustin and what wonderful memories you have to share with him.

  • @down_onthefarm - I cannot believe, in all the inane talking about ME I've subjected you to, I have not told you the moving out story. It's a trip.

@lin789 - He did not care that I know of. If he did, he certainly never said so.
