The Workplace
My job requires a lot of random things. I write grants, I do monitoring and reporting on said grants, I manage people, I deal with people in crisis, I take donations (usually stuff, like clothing household goods, etc) I pay bills, I handle crazy situations, sometimes I pick locks, sometimes I argue with angry abusers, I help people hide, and well, I could go on and on. Today's post is dedicated to my office, where I sit to do most of the deskwork part of my job.
First up, I need good tunes to listen to.

Secondly, I need my computer (Yes, it's sitting one one of those things and has an attached keyboard. An employee has assured me I will thank her for this getup in 15 years when I don't have neck problems from looking down at my laptop. I'll let you know how that goes):

Here's the desk. I'm more than willing to share it. @Myxldove

We can't leave out old Bessie. She's the printer/copier/scanner and fax (I don't use her for faxing). She was donated by HP. She calibrates herself a lot, at random times. Also, she can be a real pain in the you know what, but I love her in that way that you love things you just have to have. I named her Bessie because that's what my mom always names her car. And she's like, half the size of a prius.

Also, you can't forget my work pictures of my kids. I love it when people look at this then ask me if I have any kids. Also, one of my favorite things on this board is the postcard I got at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company in Denver. The Forrest Gump quote on it: "Always be able to look back and say, at least I didn't lead no humdrum life."

What's your workspace like?

Mine is a mess of papers right now. I have the double screen so I really master the art of multi-tasking. I have all sorts of silly things also, from the many people I come across each day. Places they've been they will usually bring me back something, etc. We have four printers, two of which are color and all of which do double sided. Only one Bessie though, well, one fax machine. There are like five others in this large office space, made up of cubicles and such and we all get along pretty well. Notice I didn't say "extremely" in that sentence. So I think you have it nice, all by yourself.
Great post and insight into where you work.
@olwd - I asked my husband just yesterday why people need two screens and he said, well if you're using two programs it's easier than switching back and forth. When I thought about it I realized I could really use two screens myself! lol
@aSeriesofFortunateEvents - Oh definitely, they are a lifesaver. I have e-mail open and Xanga, also word and adobe as well.
@olwd - I was just thinking even switching back and forth between word and excel documents. I could get done a lot quicker if I didn't have to switch windows and re-find my place every time!
BINGO!!! HEHEHE
i am multi-tasking. "talking" with one of the coolest people ever (she really should be rich. she's so good. and sharp.) while eating a sub, reading her blog... and typing! now there's mayo on my keyboard.
i calibrate randomly. so i am looking fondly at ole bessie. my kindred spirit friend. except... i no longer plan to reproduce.
i ALWAYS love the peeks into the worlds of my friends. this is cool. and no humdrum. no way.
@down_onthefarm - I wonder if you calibrate as loudly as Bessie . . . nevermind.
I like the idea of the raised laptop, I need to get one of those! Mine is usually covered by papers...lesson plans, papers to be graded, papers that are graded and need to be passed back, papers I got from meetings, papers I need to fill out for special ed. and my water bottle or coffee mug. Oh plus pictures of my adorable baby!
(and maybe one in there of the hubby too...)
Hahaha... I don't think there's enough room on your desk for all of my office crap. But I'm digging the chair. Can we share that too?
I don't have one anymore... but my school workplace should be pretty cool soon... with all those freaky mannequin heads
@MyxlDove - sure! It's super comfy.
Love the card!!! And yes you lead no hum drum life!!!!
I still dream about doing my job. So when you retire you are still working as you sleep.
Yes, my career as a nurse was always interesting. Once a fellow in the waitting room didn't have an appt. but just wanted the nurse to come out and check his balls. lol we got him in.
I had the Serenity prayer on my desk and a small snapshot of my sons in a frame.
otherwise just the usual stuff. I would tell people that I put my name on my hole puncher and scotch tape holder cause it took me 10yrs to get my own.
@Texasjillcarmel - You can't overestimate the value of a good tape dispenser and hole punch! No one's asked me to check their balls yet, thank goodness. It would be super awkward since I'm not a nurse. haha
I have no personal space at work to put stuff. I have a drawer I keep my favorite pen in and my notary seal, a slot for my current projects, a binder for my book group...and a locker I use to store Girl Scout Cookies.
It would not surprise me if someone at work asked me to look at his balls. I would give him my best librarian look and shush him. (Then probably call the cops. They are like four blocks away.)
